Range Rover Sport (2014) [w/Gallery]

Wed, 27 Mar 2013

This is the new, second-generation Range Rover Sport, unveiled at the New York Auto Show.

While the first Sport – introduced in 2005 – was a tentative toe in the water for a second Range Rover model line, this new model forms the center of a three-model range, between Evoque and full-fat Range. At 4,850mm long it's 62mm longer than the car it replaces but 149mm shorter than the new Range Rover, while its wheelbase has grown by 178mm to increase rear access – particularly important as there's now the provision of a pair of occasional seats in a third row.

Visually it also sits between its two siblings – less cartoonishly rakish in profile than the Evoque, yet with more beltline wedge and roof taper than the Range Rover. Its graphics follow the themes introduced on the other Range Rovers, with tail- and headlamps that bleed in the fenders and a new take on the fender air outlet, which here is accentuated by a feature line that flicks back into the door surface. The deep bodyside is partially alleviated by a light catcher half way down the doors, although models featuring painted lower body moldings appear quite heavy, something that also afflicts the Evoque.

As with the exterior there are few surprises inside, with now familiar IP architecture that is built around strong horizontal and vertical elements, but with a more reclined driving position than before (Sports Command Driving Position in marketing speak).
